Question about this term?Contact us

In brief for employers

A work permit or work visa answers whether a person is allowed to perform work in a specific country. For employers, this question can arise not only for long assignments, but also for workation, business trips, customer work, training delivery or project work abroad.

Definition

A work permit is authorization to perform work in a country. A work visa or residence title can be the immigration document that enables entry, stay or work. The terminology differs by country, but the practical question is the same: is the planned activity allowed for this person in this destination country?

A tourist visa or visa-free entry does not automatically permit productive work. Even a business travel visa may only allow limited activities.

Typical checks

  • Nationality and residence status of the employee
  • Destination country and duration
  • Type of activity: meeting, training, project work, remote work or local customer work
  • Employer entity and client relationship
  • Existing visa, residence permit or work authorization
  • Lead time, documents and approval process
  • Consequences if the activity changes after approval

Difference from business visa and tourist visa

A tourist visa is usually for private travel. A business visa may allow specific business activities, but not all work. A work permit or work visa concerns actual work authorization and should be checked before approval.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Does every workation need a work permit?

Not always. It depends on country, nationality, duration and activity. HR should still check it before approval.

Is a tourist visa enough for work abroad?

Usually not. A tourist visa is not an automatic permission for productive work.
