A work permit or work visa answers whether a person is allowed to perform work in a specific country. For employers, this question can arise not only for long assignments, but also for workation, business trips, customer work, training delivery or project work abroad.

Definition

A work permit is authorization to perform work in a country. A work visa or residence title can be the immigration document that enables entry, stay or work. The terminology differs by country, but the practical question is the same: is the planned activity allowed for this person in this destination country?

A tourist visa or visa-free entry does not automatically permit productive work. Even a business travel visa may only allow limited activities.

Difference from business visa and tourist visa
