Immigration & Residence

Immigration and residence law, permits & visas

Description

In this section, you will learn under what conditions employees are allowed to work from abroad as part of a workation or temporary remote work arrangement, and what role the free movement of persons, national immigration regulations, and labor law requirements play in this context.

In theory, the free movement of persons allows residents of Switzerland to work from abroad within the EU/EFTA countries. In practice, however, this is much more complex, as each country has its own rules on working during a stay. The situation is particularly challenging for third countries. Anyone working from another country needs the correct residence and immigration status. The requirements vary considerably depending on nationality, destination, and purpose of stay.

We provide practical guidance on how visa, permit, and residence regulations work in the context of workations and remote work. At the same time, you will gain an overview of typical pitfalls that can lead to fines, entry refusals, or deportation.

You will receive specific recommendations on how companies can organize cross-border work in a legally compliant manner and prepare teams to reliably comply with international requirements—without unnecessary risks for employees or employers.
